Educational Approach
The educational philosophy of the Foundation is based on the notion that by employing quality and meaningful education for individual, social, moral and intellectual development, broader ideals of peace, interfaith harmony and collective and social prosperity can be achieved.
Inspiration
The inspiration for BKEF comes from the Azad Schools experiment of Abdul Ghaffar Khan dearly known as Baacha Khan, who back in 1920 used education as a means for social transformation and established a chain of more than seventy schools in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) making the local community an integral part of his educational program. This effort was initiated at a time when there was a dire need of purposeful and quality educational system that was both easily accessible and catered to the social, cultural and developmental needs of the Pakhtoons. It was a challenging effort; however, Baacha Khan made it possible by involving the local community, stirring up in them a sense of responsibility for collective effort and self-reliance. This endeavor proved fruitful in as far as it remained unobstructed by the oppressive British colonial forces.
Current Scenario _____ a Rationale for the Emergence of BKEF
• NWFP and its adjacent areas are under the scourge of extremist forces from some time. Educational activities in these areas have suffered directly or indirectly due to miserable law and order condition, killing, harassment and kidnapping of the teaching staff, demolition or occupation of school buildings by anti- social elements. Parents prefer to keep their children especially female students off the school which has and is resulting in acute drop out of students.
• Over the years the public educational system in Pakistan has been unable to fulfill the educational needs of the country. The collapse of the public educational system has created a vacuum in which obscurantist educational institutions have mushroomed. Besides, public educational system is not responsive to the needs of the society. In these state of affairs the BKEF has come up with a system of education for marginalized groups that fulfills the requirements of modern educational trends.
• The population growth rate in NWFP which is greater than the total growth rate in Pakistan, requires corresponding number of educational institutions to improve literacy rate in the North Western Pakistan and South Eastern Afghanistan.
• Another motivation for the BKEF program is to coordinate the energies and expertise of the local communities, educationists, teachers, and professors by involving them in the program at some one or other level with a view to enhance administrative and academic excellence in education, especially for the low-income groups.
