BKTEF organises 39th Monthly Study Circle for Bacha Khan Fellows

Speakers and participants in the 39th Monthly Study Circle organised by Bacha Khan Trust Educational Foundation (BKTEF) at Bacha Markaz on 23rd Nov 2019 were of the opinion that men and women were equal and that gender roles were constructed. They thought that the social construct of inequitable gender roles led to the formation of patriarchy in various societies of the world that crippled harmonious development of humanity and that largely held women hostage by culture chauvinists, religious clergy and capitalist market.

The speakers and participants thought that the Khudai Khidmatgaar Movement initiated the struggle for equitable roles in all spheres of life including literary production, economy, politics and culture back in 1930s and 1940s. The KK Movement reinterpreted Pashtunwali to make it inclusive and enlightened. The participants and speakers presented Alif Jana Khattak as role model who contributed regularly on the subject of women emancipation and socio-Political freedoms to ‘Pukhtoon Magazine’ brought out by Bacha Khan. The poems and essays by Alif Jan Khattaka challenged restrictions on women imposed by traditions, religious clergy and colonialism.

The theme of the 39th study circle for Bacha Khan Fellows was selected to be ‘Feminism and Alif Jana Khattak’. Dr. Samina Afridi and Khan Zaman Kakar spoke on the theme in detail. The youth participants from districts of Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Khyber, Kurram, Shangla, Hangu, Swat, Dir, Malakand, Mumand and Bajaur discussed the theme and put questions to the speakers. Hayat Roghani and Dr. Khadim Hussain concluded the discussion with their own views.
